During World War II, many prisoners of war (POWs) captured by the United States military forces were sent to POW camps in America . One of these camps was the Algona Camp located in Iowa, which gave birth to many smaller camps in the Midwest. In 1944, there was a severe agricultural labor shortage in Clay County, Minnesota. This was due to the men of the community serving in the war. German POWs were sent to Moorhead from the Algona site to work and were released in 1946, after the war's end.
