During the 1960s, downtown Moorhead fell into an economic decline due to urbanization. Leaders of Moorhead saw urban renewal as a solution to direct traffic away from new shopping centers and back to businesses downtown. By the early 1970s, a majority of downtown Moorhead was reduced to rubble and replaced with the Moorhead Center Mall. Today, the community is coming together to revitalize downtown and once again make it a vibrant city center.
